TeacherReady is an online alternative certification program targeted to individuals interested in a career transition to the teaching profession. TeacherReady is state approved and NCATE accredited, and upon completion of TeacherReady individuals earn a professional teaching certificate from the State of Florida. Many of our Teacher Candidates are affiliated with the military: active duty, military spouse, or retired.

This week TeacherReady representatives, including Dr. Sarah Miller, program director, have an exhibit at the Council of College and Military Educators annual symposium in Orlando, Florida. Our attendance at the CCME is one example of our continued focus to engage with leaders in the field of military education and remain on the leading edge of alternative professional teaching certification as an option for military education. This is especially important given potential changes in funding and policy.

The first cohort of TeacherReady teacher candidates completed the program and earned professional teaching certification from Florida in 2005-2006. Now, six years later over 400 new teachers have earned their professional certification through TeacherReady. Many of these are/were affiliated with the military. We understand the special challenges of coordinating military education; for example, over the last two weeks we communicated with representatives connected with military education and with our university affiliate to ensure that military and military-related individuals (through funding) accepted to the February 2012 cohort of TeacherReady are able to start on-time.

We continue to work with Troops to Teachers and Veterans Affairs; in addition, we work with MyCCA and the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard, all of which provide their own teaching assistance for individuals affiliated with their branch of service and who are enrolled in TeacherReady. The TeacherReady home office is located on the Florida Gulf Coast in Pensacola, Florida, home of Naval Air Station Pensacola, the Blue Angels, and the National Naval Aviation Museum. NAS Pensacola was the first Naval Air Station commissioned by the U.S. Navy and is known as “The Cradle of Naval Aviation.”

We salute the work of our military men and women and their family members, and appreciate the opportunity to offer them and others interested in a career transition to the teaching profession a quality, state approved, and nationally accredited teacher certification program to get there.
