Since 2001, Ohio has offered individuals who want to change careers and become teachers an opportunity to do so through alternative certification programs. See an article from StateImpact Ohio (February 17, 2012) titled Career-Changing Professionals Turn to Alternative Certification to Get Into the Classroom ASAP for more information.

The TeacherReady program is an online alternative certification program targeted to individuals interested in a career transition to the teaching profession. The program is 9 months, state approved (FL), NCATE accredited, and affiliated with the University of West Florida. The curriculum is grounded in the work of Drs. Janet Pilcher and Robin Largue; they have been teachers and leaders in the education field for more than 30 years. For the past 5 years, Drs. Pilcher and Largue have provided professional development for teachers using the “Student Engagement Framework” described in detail in the book Who’s Engaged? Climb the Learning Ladder to See. They have received high marks in teacher training sessions focused on the content of the book. On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the highest score they maintain an average rating of 9.80. Why? Because the skills learned get right to the heart of how teachers can improve student learning.

Bottom line is that effective teaching does not cost a lot of money and the return on investment for the money spent is invaluable to students. In fact, those of us at TeacherReady recommend the need for school leaders to reallocate the millions of dollars spent on “silver bullet” programs and products to pay teachers who are committed to learning how to better their skills and refocus their wills. For decades, teachers have witnessed school district leaders spending millions of dollars to buy the “one” content-based program, the “one” curriculum, the “one” data management tool, or the “one” high priced consultant only to find a limited effect on student learning. Just think what might happen if the funds spent on the “one new solution” were spent to pay teachers to help them improve through continuous development practices. Teachers would be more satisfied with their work; students would be more satisfied with their learning; and parents would be more satisfied with the child’s education.
