The Center for Comprehensive School Reform and Improvement Issue Brief on “Successful School Turnarounds: Seven Steps for District Leaders” (09.15.2009) includes three priority items for district leader action to support turnaround change. Priority actions for leaders are to (p. 7):
1. Take action to build the pipeline of qualified turnaround principals.
2. Establish structures within the district office to accommodate the deviations from standard policy that turnaround schools will require.
3. Commit to turnarounds as part of a complete and relentless strategy to eliminate chronic low-performance from the district.
In addition to the seven steps for leaders to turnaround schools and the three priority actions, the article also highlights competencies of a Turnaround Leader from a full list from Public Impact (2008).
