Meet TeacherReady instructor Dr. Jonathan Crawford. He has taught for nearly 20 years at the secondary education level in Alabama. During this time, Dr. Crawford served as a Social Studies Department Chair, Senior Class Sponsor and School Improvement Committee Member. He also was responsible for providing district-wide professional development to equip teachers with innovative instructional strategies for reaching at-risk students.
Dr. Crawford joined the TeacherReady instructor team two years ago. At the completion of each Lesson, students evaluate the lesson and the instructor; there are three questions on the instructor evaluation and Dr. Crawford has earned the highest overall mean score of all our instructors for two questions and ranks third among his peers for another:
My questions were answered in a timely manner by my lesson instructor.
The TeacherReady staff and my instructor show concern for me as a student.
My Lesson instructor provided meaningful feedback that will assist me on my journey towards becoming a teacher of excellence.
More importantly, students recognize Dr. Crawford’s commitment to them through both solicited comments, for example, “provided a balance of positive and constructive comments,” and unsolicited comments like Nancy’s email below which we recently received:
Thank you for being my teacher. After 3 Master’s Degrees and 3 Bachelor’s Degrees, I can tell you that you are, truly, one of the best teachers that I have ever had in my education.
I don’t know where this additional certificate will take me, as I am finding it difficult to secure an overseas teaching position in an International School. However, knowing you and having a connection with you, made all of the work that I have done in the TeacherReady program, justifiable. Sometimes, it’s not “outcome” that is the crux of learning, but the “journey or the process, and the people that you meet along the way” that holds the true gems for life learning. Thank you for being on my journey.
My best to you in everything that comes your way,
Dr. Sarah Miller, Director of TeacherReady, the University of West Florida’s Education Preparation Institute (EPI) shared Nancy’s comments with Dr. Crawford and the other TeacherReady teachers as an opportunity to thank all of them for their commitment to prepare new teachers:
Sometimes we lose focus about why we do what we do. This comment is a great reminder to all of us. I am sure many of our students feel this way even if they don’t take the time to let us know. Thanks for all you do!
As educators and preparers of educators we have an opportunity to share our passion for the teaching profession, our love for learning, and our tireless commitment to help students learn, grow, and achieve. Great teachers make great schools. We celebrate Dr. Crawford’s work as a great teacher and thank him for being a mentor to our TeacherReady teacher candidates as he helps prepare them to enter the teaching profession.
Dr. Crawford earned a BA in Political Science, an MA in Secondary Education and an Ed.S. in Secondary Social Sciences all from the University of Alabama.
