The MyGrade GPA Exercise encourages classroom teachers to take a moment to reflect on their classroom practices by reviewing a statement and then using an A to F grade to rate their performance. This week’s MyGrade GPA Exercise focuses on providing opportunities for students to practice skills, integrating formative assessments, and providing feedback. As teachers, our goal is to place students in winning situations where they are eager to learn, take on challenges, and own their learning.

What does this mean at the school-level? Leaders encourage and provide opportunities for:

  • Teachers to clearly communicate defined learning targets and use good formative assessment approaches to coach students to succeed.
  • Teachers to create assessments focused only on academics (not behavior or effort).
  • Teachers to learn methods of instructing students through the “critical learning point” of moving from consciously unskilled to consciously skilled.

Participate in this week’s Exercise:

A teacher’s ability and willingness to coach students and associate student success with how well students learn rather than what they teach becomes extremely critical to move students through the critical learning point of being consciously unskilled to consciously skilled. At this critical learning point students depend on teachers helping, not hurting them. Coaching students at this most tense moment determines effective and ineffective teaching. Even teachers who have had successful student learning results could get better results by paying attention to those moments where tension in learning. What does this mean at the classroom-level?

  • Teachers create learning environments where students want to learn and gain confidence as they experience success.
  • Teachers provide students with very specific feedback on what they do well and where they need to improve.
  • Teachers create ways for students to practice and receive pointed feedback that identifies gaps and reinforces strengths.

Participate with us in the MyGrade GPA Exercise through each Monday through the remainder of July. At the end of the summer, you can calculate your overall GPA; we will do the same using all anonymous poll responses.
