The success of any principal depends on the success of the teachers within the school. Check out 11 tips for principals in New Habits for Principals by Drs. Janet Pilcher and Robin Largue.
Great teachers make great schools. They are the ones who work tirelessly to help students learn, grow, and achieve, the ones who make sure parents are satisfied with their children’s learning experience, the ones who never give up. But what role do great leaders play? Quite simply, they create the conditions that foster and nourish a school full of great teachers.
Mr. Denny Wilson, Principal at Oakcrest Elementary School in the Escambia County School District (FL), is a leader creating such conditions. “Every Student, Every Day… Whatever It Takes to Make a Difference” are the words of Principal Wilson and represent the school motto at Oakcrest. Oakcrest teachers believe and practice these words. Listen to a portion of Principal Wilson’s presentation at Studer Education’s What’s Right in Education conference last year where he talked about what “living” these words means to him:
what it means to have purpose, do worthwhile work, and make a difference;
what it means to be have the right people at the right time; and
what it means to believe in a school, its students, and teachers.
Let us know how you relate to in Principal Wilson’s words. Which of the 11 Tips do you recognize in your work as a teacher or leader? We invite you to share your experiences in the comments section.
