Our research intern, Erika, is an undergraduate student in Community Health at the University of West Florida. She is identifying issues in the research related to rural healthcare and rural education. We met earlier today and she presented an article associated with parent involvement in education (not necessarily rural education) by Deslandes and Bertrand (Jan-Feb 2005). In its literature review the article includes discussion of research (see Comer & Haynes, 1991; Dauber & Epstein, 1993; Eccles & Harold, 1996; and Epstein, 1986) that suggests:

Parents are more likely to be involved if: (a) the school climate is inviting, (b) there are opportunities for involvement; and/or (c) teachers communicate an expectation for involvement.

Pilcher and Largue (2010) propose that teachers should make parents feel that they have a place in their child’s education. In performance-driven classrooms, parents feel that the teacher cares to know them, understands their needs regarding their child, and believes they and their child are important. Of course, this kind of parent-teacher relationship does not automatically occur. Teachers need to do particular things at the beginning of each year to build a genuine relationship with parents.

The Effective GPA Exercise encourages classroom teachers to take a moment to reflect on their classroom practices by reviewing a statement and then using an A to F grade to rate their performance. Participate in this week’s Exercise:
