TeacherReady is an alternative certification program where individuals interested in teaching can earn a professional teaching certificate from the state of Florida. As part of the 9 month curriculum, these pre-service teachers are taught Teaching ALWAYS Actions™, which describe what it takes for teachers to engage students in a classroom which leads to higher student learning results. Not only does the TeacherReady curriculum include these actions, but the  satisfaction surveys we administer following each lesson in TeacherReady ask the pre-service teachers to evaluate the lesson across these actions. For example, one of the questions asks whether the instructor provided meaningful feedback that will assist the pre-service teacher on his/her journey towards becoming a teacher of excellence. Another question asks the pre-service teacher to rate whether the expectations for the lesson was clear, and a separate question asks whether the instructor showed concern for the pre-service teacher as a student.

During in-service training with current teachers we state that the ALWAYS Actions™ are something that a teacher must do more than “sometimes” and “usually” in order to effectively engage his/her students. TeacherReady students rated their instructors as doing just that, with the majority (86-89%) rating the items below in the “Strongly Agree” and “Agree” categories of their instructor’s action; consider the following means (n > 600):

My instructor provided meaningful feedback = 4.29 / 5.00

My instructor showed concern for me as a student = 4.39 / 5.00

The expectations for this lesson were clear = 4.28 / 5.00

Teachers that effectively use the Teaching ALWAYS Actions™ help students become more engaged and confident learners, which leads to higher student learning results. In TeacherReady, we teach pre-service teachers to apply these actions so that when they enter the classroom as a newly certified teacher they will enjoy great success improving student engagement and consequently student learning.

It’s nearing the end of the school year. Take some time to ask your students for feedback across these items to help you think about creating an effective learning environment for future students. What will you stop doing? What will you stop doing? Remember, feedback is not just for students; at a recent in-service training current teachers shared “feedback helps teachers improve instruction… and transitions [teachers] to the next steps in learning… Reflective practice occurs when [teachers] use the data from student feedback opportunities.”
