Great principals create the conditions that foster and nourish a school full of great teachers. October is National Principals Month and represents an opportunity to celebrate the work of these school leaders. The National Principals Month website provides resources and suggestions for celebration and reminds visitors:
Principals are among the hardest working, yet often least recognized individuals in education. Principals set the academic tone for their schools, and it is their vision, dedication, and determination that provide the mobilizing force for achieving student success.
Principal Denny Wilson is an Escambia County School District (FL) Principal of the Year and leads a school-full of great teachers and support staff at Oakcrest Elementary School. The audio clip below highlights the challenges Principal Wilson faced in his new leadership role and how his focus on “Purpose, Worthwhile Work, and Making a Difference” impacted the school’s culture and allowed students, their parents and grandparents, the school and its neighborhood to begin believing all the best things about education.
Principal Wilson is an example of what happens when we as school leaders support teachers. That is, when we support teachers we influence the way teachers connect with their students. Working together, we can all help students learn that they have purpose, can do worthwhile work, and make a difference in the lives of others and the world we live in. “Every student, every day, whatever it takes.”
