Great teachers make great schools. They are the ones who work tirelessly to help students learn, grow, and achieve. Herber says, “My goal is to ensure my students do not know they are disadvantaged” (People). One measure of achievement? In five years since Mr. Herber arrived at Oakcrest, proficiency levels for Fifth Graders in science have moved from 16% to 66% (People). Students struggle with learning on their own – they depend on teachers to create classrooms that focus first and foremost on how well students learn. Join me and my colleagues in celebrating how Mr. Herber and all of People‘s 2013 Teachers of the Year do just that.
