In addition to the teachers and students, the class team also includes a third member, the parents or caregivers of students. When teachers help parents become part of the team rather than just spectators, they create a more supportive and open learning culture for the students. It is perfectly natural for parents to want to know how their children are doing in class. By communicating student learning results to parents, parents learn:
how well their child performed on learning targets;
where their child needs additional help and support from them; and
the exact learning targets and measures where their child is experiencing learning gaps.
When teachers share student learning information with parents every 30 days and make positive phone calls home to parents, we find that parent satisfaction results increase. For example, one of the top Parent Satisfaction Survey items across our school district partners is “My Child’s learning is a high priority at this school.” Check out this example of a teacher in the Escambia County School District (FL) connecting with one child’s parent:
Identifying stand out students creates 4 winners in schools: the student, the parent, the teacher, and the administrator. Each is recognized by the other 3 individuals as special people who care about others. Important to our goal of developing relationships with our students and parents, the parent is pleased with the administrator, the teacher and most of all his/her child. Studer Education recommends that teachers and school leaders make at least 3 to 5 positive phone calls home per week. This method of recognizing and rewarding student success creates positive relationships among our parents, educators, and educational leaders.
