The Baldrige criteria and the use of a systems framework has really made us a much, much more high-achieving school district.

These are the words of Dr. JoAnn Sternke, Superintendent of Pewaukee School District. Dr. Sternke and her colleagues in the Pewaukee School District were awarded the 2013 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. In the video clip below Dr. Sternke shares a brief overview of her changing role as superintendent in Pewaukee and how the Baldrige criteria and a systems framework influenced the change.

“Create relationships. Build plans to achieve success. Create systems and processes. And create a culture for innovation as well as manage intelligent risk taking and innovation” (Sternke). The Baldrige criteria and a systems framework allows leaders, staff, and teachers in the district to “think differently in the midst of thinking more systematically,” Dr. Sternke shares this and more in the clip below.

In How to Lead… my colleagues Drs. Janet Pilcher and Robin Largue share that the ideas in the book, and those they share in their daily work with school leaders, are aimed at helping students achieve outstanding results—which is, they say, the goal of everyone involved. Dr. Sternke echos the same message—providing kids educational opportunities so that they can have successful futures.
