Great teachers walk into their classrooms every day deeply caring that all students experience success… What we do as school leaders to support teachers influences the way teachers connect with their students… Working together, district and school leaders and teachers can help students learn that they have purpose, can do worthwhile work, and make a difference in the lives of others and the world we live in. —Pilcher and Largue, 2009

The video clip below of Dr. JoAnn Sternke illuminates the results of a district whose leaders, staff, and teachers work together. Dr. Sternke is the Superintendent of the Pewaukee School District; in the video she describes with data how she and her colleagues help open the door to each child’s future.

Quality-focused criteria and continuous improvement models align goals and measures, and provide leaders data to drive decisions that accelerate movement to the goals. When leaders consistently and coherently move toward their goals and measures, they create a results-driven and performance-driven culture that produces improved student engagement; improved employee engagement; and a great place for faculty to teach and staff to work, and for children to receive an excellent education.

Dr. JoAnn Sternke is Superintendent of Pewaukee School District (WI). Prior to earning the 2013 Baldrige Award, Sternke led the school district to receive the state’s highest award, the Wisconsin Forward Award. All schools in the district have an “excellence” distinction. In her What’s Right in Education presentation titled “Creating a Culture of Excellence,” Dr. Sternke shared the continuous improvement process that set the stage for Baldrige recognition.
