In the most recent edition of Teaching Today, TeacherReady® teacher Jennifer Simon (July 2010) reflects on her TeacherReady experience leading to professional teaching certification.
Thanks to the TeacherReady® team I have been afforded an international teaching career that has given me fantastic insight into other cultures and great partnerships with parents as we provide a bright future for their children.
My husband and I received an email one afternoon in 2009 from a family member asking us to take the plunge and teach overseas with him in Cairo, Egypt. My husband was a university instructor so the switch to high school students would be easy. I, on the other hand, was working on instructional design modules about how to utilize latent fuel energy for vehicle engineers. How would this work out for me? With Microsoft certifications in hand to teach IT classes, we decided to take a chance and sold all of our belongings on a chance at overseas adventure.
While the school accepted my prior IT experience and technology certifications, it was imperative that I obtain a teaching license to continue teaching. After researching programs online, I discovered TeacherReady® and knew it was the perfect program for me to gain valuable education and ESL pedagogy and best-practice knowledge. Dr. Sarah Miller and her team are fantastic and were very supportive of my overseas circumstances (especially during our evacuation from the country during the January 2011 revolution – right in the middle of my practicum!).
I am currently enjoying my newest overseas adventure as a Technology Integration Specialist at the American International School in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. In the past two years, I have been able to transform our current elementary technology program from standalone ICT sessions to integrated class sessions and have piloted Robotics and Coding programs. With my recent promotion to the Academic PreK-12 Technology Coordinator I hope to continue to upgrade the technology practices of all four of our campuses for both staff and students.
