NCATE, the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, summarizes research about teacher preparation in “What Makes a Teacher Effective?” found here on the NCATE website. It’s NCATE’s response to recent critics “questioning the role of teacher preparation as a key to teacher effectiveness.”
Top 3 findings from the report?
1. Teacher preparation helps candidates develop the knowledge and skill they need in the classroom.
2. Well-prepared teachers are more likely to remain in teaching.
3. Well-prepared teachers produce higher student achievement.
The report reminds us that as critically important it is for teachers to know the subject area of what they are teaching, it’s as important for teachers to know how to teach the subject, “Effective teachers understand and are able to apply strategies to help students increase achievement” (In section, “The Issue”).
The learning must not stop when these new teachers hit the classroom for the first time… As instructors in teacher preparation programs, and as school and district educational leaders, we must support and engage these new teachers and provide them a school environment where they can be successful and achieve at their highest performance levels.
