Employees who perceive their immediate supervisor (leader) is engaged with them in the workplace are more satisfied in the workplace, and therefore do their job better. Tools we use with K12 district partners to drive employee engagement and results across organizational goals include organization-wide surveys that measure the perception of employees with regard to the degree to which their immediate leader and district-level leaders who assist them provide the type of work environment that supports their ability to perform at the highest level. Two examples include:
District Services Survey which provides a measure of satisfaction with organizational departments as determined by internal leaders and evaluates leaders across five measures: Accessibility, Accuracy, Attitude, Operations, and Timeliness. This survey is initially administered for a baseline measure and then administered quarterly to all departments within the organization.
The Employee Engagement Survey measures an employee’s perception about how well his/her immediate supervisor provides the type of work environment that supports the employee’s ability to perform at his/her highest level. After its initial administration for a baseline measure, this survey is administered in the fall and spring to all employees within the organization.
Organizations are encouraged to use a survey that meets their needs. Once the survey is administered and the data collected and analyzed, all leaders then explain or roll out the results of the survey with their colleagues. Use the data to facilitate the development of a 90 day action plan based on the priority areas identified in the data roll out meetings. This is the process of understanding and getting to, “If my leader is engaged, then I’m more satisfied” as an employee. That is, it’s the process of presenting and communicating the results and creating an action plan after the survey is completed that leads to improving engagement and satisfaction.
