As the country celebrates National Military Appreciation month, our colleagues at TeacherReady share their continued commitment to Service men and women, their families, and the education programs and centers of the military. Nearly 900 active duty, reserve, and retired military personnel or their family members are currently enrolled in TeacherReady or have earned their professional teaching certificate through TeacherReady. TeacherReady Teacher and retired Army officer Heatherann Bozeman is one of them.

TeacherReady works with Troops to Teachers and Veterans Affairs; in addition, we work with MyCCA and the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard, all of which provide their own teaching assistance for eligible individuals affiliated with their branch of service and who are enrolled in TeacherReady.

During Military Appreciate Month and throughout the year, we salute the work of our military men and women and their family members. We appreciate the opportunity to offer them and others interested in a career transition to the teaching profession a quality, state-approved, and nationally accredited teacher certification program to get there.

One way teachers engage students across their individual classrooms at the beginning of a school year is by collaborating to create a Class Mission Statement. The Mission Statement activity is an opportunity:

for teachers to get to know his/her students and begin building a relationship with each of them. This is because students share and exchange ideas that personalize the classroom mission to themselves. [People]

to synthesize individual comments received and build into a collective message. [Academic Achievement]

to define behavioral and academic expectations and associated actions to help the learning community align the behavior to achieve. [People, Quality]

to establish a safe learning environment. [Operations, People]

Our newest class of TeacherReady teacher candidates which began Orientation yesterday are now engaged in the Mission Statement activity. As part of the activity we ask them to reflect on what they hope to learn and to think about what they think will be most helpful to them as a first year teacher. Here are a few of their responses:

I hope to learn how to successfully organize a classroom, create a curriculum and best engage my students in their own learning.

I hope to use the information that I gain as I matriculate through this program coupled with what I learned in college to mold me into a successful and inspiring teacher.

The most important thing I want to learn is how to reach each student individually, to ensure that no student is overlooked.

I hope to learn how to design engaging lesson plans in a way to make students think critically about what they are learning and to encourage them to explore their own learning styles.

I believe the most important thing to learn through this program is how to communicate to the students the importance of education.

I hope to learn how to be an amazing teacher. An amazing teacher knows how and when to push students to go that extra mile, knows when to let up, understands the mind set of his/her students and caters to their learning needs.

It’s been several years since I first stepped into a high school and middle school classroom for the first time. The responses of these new teacher candidates—the hope, the energy, and the enthusiasm in their messages—serves as a great reminder of the “why” we become educators and leaders in education. It’s about creating great classrooms for students to learn, feel successful, and achieve.

The Colorado Department of Education (DOE) regards TeacherReady, a state approved and nationally accredited teacher preparation program affiliated with the University of West Florida, for initial teacher certification licensure in Colorado and its teachers “highly qualified.”

More than 316 individuals living in Colorado are current or former teacher candidates in TeacherReady. Once they complete TeacherReady, these teachers are considered highly qualified teachers in Colorado and are ready to make a difference in the lives of students.

In addition to this recognition from Colorado’s DOE, TeacherReady works closely with the Troops to Teachers program in Colorado and the Troops to Teachers representatives have been very supportive of the TeacherReady program. The Troops to Teachers organization continues to work to help active duty and retired military to transition into teaching. TeacherReady is particularly attractive to retired and active military personnel who are living in Colorado. It is largely through the support and efforts of the Troops to Teachers’ representatives that TeacherReady received this special designation from the Colorado Department of Education.

TR_TTTThe “highly qualified” formal recognition from Colorado DOE provides TeacherReady the unique opportunity to reach out to second career individuals and support them in their teaching endeavors. Thinking about teaching? Teach with TeacherReady!

Troops Who Choose to Teach and TeacherReady®

Serving others is in some folks’ DNA. This is certainly the case for military personnel who choose to become teachers following their military service. At Studer Education and TeacherReady® we think service members who want to teach can be great teachers and educational leaders – their choice to teach is “what’s right” in education – and we are excited to partner with them to help them earn professional teaching certification in Florida.

We asked TeacherReady® aspiring teachers who chose to teach following their military career to “Discuss why [they] chose education as a second career.” Their responses include (selected):

Teaching has been a significant component of my work throughout my life. Moving into a more formal classroom setting seemed a logical step. In addition, colleagues and friends consistently, and independently of each other, affirmed teaching as one of my strengths. Though academically qualified to teach at the collegiate level, my life circumstances make pursuing a high school teaching position the right choice for me.

I found that as an Air Force instructor, I found great satisfaction in watching students grow and I enjoyed being able to help someone achieve objectives. This continued into the elementary education arena because I felt I could use my military background/experiences to help children succeed in their studies.

I was very excited to become a teacher as a second career. After spending many years as a volunteer in my children’s classrooms and I then several years as a substitute teacher I was confident that this was a good career choice for me and a great choice because I was a military spouse.

The majority of respondents stated that TeacherReady® prepared them for their first teaching position and would recommend this state-approved, online alternative certification program to other military personnel and their families. Furthermore, respondents either “strongly agreed” or “agreed” that they participated in professional conversations with their mentor teacher during field expenses in addition to teachers other than or in addition to their mentor teacher. The majority of respondents also said that TeacherReady® met their military status/position needs during their time of enrollment in the program.

The teaching profession benefits from service members choosing teaching as a second career and, more importantly, students in K-12 benefit. The responses of our military TeacherReady® aspiring teachers allows us to revisit our program delivery and enrollment processes so that we can better serve our military and others interesting in the teaching profession; we hope that you connect with their responses and see teaching as a continued public service to our nation so that teaching becomes an “option” for you and other individuals who may have never considered it before.
